Below is my definition of a great wedge game:
· Consistent and crisp contact with the ability to hold any green
· Dialed in distances – do you know how far you hit your wedges with a full swing, ¾ swing and ½ swing?
· Ability to manage trajectory on your wedges.
Crisp Contact
We want a descending strike, ball and then turf (negative angle of attack on our launch monitor). This is done by having more weight on your front foot and your front shoulder angled down towards the target with the ball placed towards your back foot. It’s then a controlled back swing (1/2 , 3/4 or full swing) and then accelerating through the ball.
Dialed in Distances
This is difficult to do on the driving range as it’s almost impossible to know how far you carry the ball plus a range ball does not perform the same as the ball you use in play. A launch monitor is critical for this as well as it is for your entire bag.
Managing Trajectory
This is challenging to learn on the driving range. The launch monitor provides you with accurate feedback on angle of attack, spin, launch angle, height and landing angle. You get immediate feedback on what you have achieved with each swing. You can then optimize these numbers with your strike and ball selection.
Equipment Matters
To have a great wedge game, fresh clean wedges with a premium ball are key to controlling trajectory and spin of the ball. If you can’t remember when you purchased your wedges or have changed out your grips a couple of times on your wedges, it’s time for new ones. Carry a groove brush to keep them clean -this is critical! The ball absolutely matters and we can assist you in selecting the right ball for your game.
